Sunday Morning Nelson Dining Hall Breakfast Line
The Nelson Court dining hall illuminates cultural truths about our campus. The space functions as a melting pot for students across all races, genders, sexual identities, social classes, majors, etc., thus causing students who wouldn't normally interact with each other to do so. Our group arranged a list of unspoken rules that apply to the space, and explored the causalities of these rules–in addition to outlining the definitive rules. Although we specifically studied Nelson Court, we found that many of our rules can be applied to other on-campus dining locations. The rules which pertain to the dining halls reverberate into other facets of student interaction on campus, giving us a better understanding of social relations at OU.
Clothing rules:
Sweatpants and t-shirts
Messy hair and last night’s makeup
Conversation rules:
What happened last night/regrets
“I can’t believe you did that”
Food rules:
If someone drops a plate, you must clap
Everyone wants hashbrowns
The salad bar is left alone
Social rules:
Must be within the age range 18-20
Some older people work there
Moms and dads stand out like sore thumbs and wear OU Mom and OU Dad t-shirts
People are either talking to someone in line or on their phone
Nobody is sitting alone
Avoid eye contact with strangers
Not a place to take a date
